Of those spaces that are filled, a number aren’t even stores. One is a dance studio. Another is a dental office.
“De-malling” — that’s what retail analyst Jeff Green, president and CEO of Jeff Green Partners in Phoenix, calls it. He said the trend is playing out across the country: Malls unable to attract a sufficient number of stores are accepting non-retail tenants. They are transforming, he said, into “community centers.”
New Saks Fifth Avenue will have its own upscale place to dine

The 80,000-square-foot Saks space — one of the key anchors for the $315 million mall in Sarasota County — also will boast its own restaurant, and be one of the first in the chain to do so.

Major expansion set for Baybrook Mall
David Kaplan / Houston Chronicle – Baybrook Mall, already among the Houston area’s most profitable per square foot, will become one of its physically largest as well, through a major expansion announced Monday that will give it about the same footprint as west Houston’s Memorial City Mall. It would be surpassed in size only by the Galleria, a bona fide tourist destination that is known internationally.
